Driving around is one of the best ways to see France outside of the main cities. The excellent road network, amazing landscapes and thousands of small towns and villages make driving an attractive propostion.

The main tools you need to create your own affordable and memorable self drive itinerary are:

www.maps.google.com

www.driveaway.com.au
www.campanile.fr

It is recommended that you buy a Michelin road atlas for around 20 Euro at the first service station you come to.

Many car hire companies now offer GPS with their car or you can bring your own from Australia. These can be an absolute lifesaver. They can also be fairly frustrating at times so its swings and roundabouts.

Below is a three week self drive itinerary that covers many of France's most interesting and rewarding destinations. It is still only scratching the surface but is still more rewarding than an off the shelf tour. Hotels have been carefully chosen for their location, value and charm.
