The Atlantic coast from Bordeaux to Bilbao (Spain) is Europe’s only reliable surf area. The Cote d’Argent or Silver Coast is also one of the least populated areas of Europe. The coast runs about 150 km from Biarritz to Arcachon punctuated by only a few small resorts. The coast is backed by the huge Landes Forest planted by Napoleon to arrest the encroaching dunes.

The hot surfing beaches are Hossegor, Biarritz and Moilliets at the southern end of the Cote d’Argent.

The Atlantic waters can be a little cold outside of July and August so wetsuits are recommended. If you are bringing your board, check with the airline you are travelling with as to your baggage allowance.

If you are only looking to surf for a day or two it might be worth considering hiring a board. It is possible to rent boards and wetsuits in places like Biarritz, Hossegor and Seignosse fairly cheaply.

There are plenty of camp sites or apartments for rent. Remember that August tends to be mayhem so is best avoided.

A campervan is not a bad option for those looking to spend a while chasing waves up and down the Atlantic Coast, especially if there are a few of you.
