Gîtes Ruraux (pronounced zheet rooroh) is an interesting accommodation option. Essentially a gîte is fully furnished holiday rentals usually in rural France that are equipped for self-catering. There are over 55,000 gites registered in France with Gîtes de France. Typically a rural gite would be on a farm or vineyard with former staff quarters, barns etc converted into a self catering apartment. Technically the owner must live on the property, provide a welcome and assistance to guests if need be.

Gites, like holiday rentals need to be rented for a week at a time (usually Saturday to Saturday). A Gîtes Ruraux property might often offer Chambres d'Hôte and 'Camping a la Ferme' as well.
